When you’re visiting London, there are plenty of spectacular sights to see, including some of the city’s Royal Palaces — and there’s none with a better location than the Tower of London.

Situated on the bank of the River Thames, the Tower of London offers wonderful views, a rich history, and fantastic day out for families, couples, or anyone else interested in learning more about London’s past. Here’s everything you should know if you’re planning a visit.

What can I see at the Tower of London?

The Tower is home to the famous Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom, worn by British monarchs during their coronations. The Jewels are one of the most visited objects in the country. The resident ravens are another favourite at the attraction; thought of as protectors to the Crown, superstition says that if the ravens leave the Tower, the Crown — and Britain — will fall.

There’s lots more to see, including armoury worn by British royalty, palace guards, and the torture and imprisonment exhibitions, plus you can opt for a walking tour with a Yeoman Warder at no additional cost.

How do I get to the Tower?

It’s easily accessible via bus, tube, train and even boat! Tower Hill Underground station is just a few minutes’ walk from the Tower, and is served by the Circle and District lines, while Fenchurch Street station is the closest for National Rail.

Many bus routes run close to the Tower, so even if you’re staying centrally in hotels like the Montcalm, you can access the Tower easily — the best place to check the most convenient for you is the TfL website. Alternatively, the River Bus (boat) service can drop you at Tower Pier, right outside.

How much does it cost to visit the Tower?

An adult ticket to the Tower costs £24.70, while concessions get in for £19.30. A little more than you were expecting? There are lots of special offers London visitors can take advantage of, and the Tower of London participates in the National Rail 2–4–1 deal on attractions when you travel by train.

What other sights should I visit in the area?

If you’re visiting the area, it’ll well worth paying a visit to Tower Bridge, one of London’s most iconic landmarks, and taking a stroll around St Katharine Docks, for an out-of-city vibe.

Maltby Street and Borough Markets, both serving delicious street food, are within walking distance as well — but you’ll need to cross to the south side of the river on foot via Tower Bridge.

A city full of sights and experiences, London is the perfect destination for a weekend break or a longer stay. From budget chains, through to luxury hotels like the Montcalm Hotel Spa, there’s something to suit all budgets. Whatever it is on your bucket list, be it historical palaces, or a trip to the spa London will have what you need to plan your perfect trip.
